Fresh juices and smoothies for fall

Fresh juices and smoothies are a great way to quench your thirst and up your intake of nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables. As the weather starts to cool down, it’s a great time of year to strengthen your immune system and prepare for flu season ahead.

A juicing machine is ideal for most fruits and vegetables—extracting the liquid allows us to consume a larger amount of nutrients in one go. However there are some foods, including avocadoes and bananas, that should not be juiced.

When you want to include foods that cannot be juiced, or add textured ingredients such as coconut or yoghurt, a blender is best. Blending also retains the dietary fibre found in fruits and vegetables, which can help you maintain a healthy weight and reduce the risk of diabetes and heart disease.

Whether you juice or blend, get creative and discover your favourite flavours. Try using these  great ingredients:

Kale

These leafy greens are top of the charts for nutrient density and are an excellent source of vitamin K, vitamin A, vitamin C, fibre and carotenoids, as well as 45 different flavonoids with a variety of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Try blending frozen kale with equal parts pineapple, yoghurt and water for a delicious and healthy green smoothie.

Lemon

Lemons are full of vitamin C, which is a powerful antioxidant that helps combat free radical damage and reduces the visible signs of ageing. It also supports the immune system to help keep colds and flu at bay. Try juicing half a lemon with a couple of apples for a natural lemonade, or juice half a lemon with an orange, red capsicum and three carrots for a tasty juice bursting with vitamin C.

Honey

Add some natural sweetness to your smoothie with Manuka Honey. This sweet food is produced in New Zealand and contains unique plant phenols that have unique properties. Add a spoonful of Manuka Honey to a blender with a frozen banana, skim milk and malt powder for a healthy banana smoothie to help you power through the afternoon.
