4 Tips for Summer Hair Care

Getting some sun and hitting the surf may be fun, but it isn’t so great for our hair.

To keep your locks in top condition, we’ve put together some tips for keeping hair healthy, shiny and frizz-free over summer.

Stay sun smart
Being sun smart isn’t just about protecting your skin. The heat and UV rays from the sun can also damage our hair, leaving it brittle, dry and faded. Prevention, as always, is key. So pull back hair into a low bun and wear a wide-brimmed hat to protect both your hair, face, and neck against sun damage. If you’re swimming, spraying your hair with a sunscreen specifically formulated for hair may offer some protection. You can also try combing through a leave-in conditioner, which acts as a barrier to sunlight, salt water and chlorine. Rinsing your hair with tap water can also reduce the amount of seawater and chlorine your hair will absorb.

Reduce frizz
The humidity of summer can make hair prone to frizzing, especially if you have natural waves or curls. Other factors like coloring, straightening or blow-drying hair can also roughen the cuticles of the hair shaft and cause damage. To keep the hair shaft healthy and moisturized, comb through a tiny amount of coconut or argan oil through the ends of wet or dry hair. Try to let your hair dry naturally and limit your use of styling products and heat tools.

Trim regularly
A good trim every six to eight weeks will get rid of split ends and prevent them from traveling up the hair shaft and damaging hair. It will also keep your hair looking great and make it easier to style. Talk to your hairdresser about a gentle shampoo and conditioner with natural products that will help maintain your color and nourish hair over the warmer months.

Eat well
Great hair starts on the inside. A healthy diet with a wide range of nutrients will help your hair grow healthy and strong. Hair is made of protein, so make sure you consume enough protein in your diet to prevent your hair becoming dry, brittle and weak. Iron is also an especially important mineral for hair, in addition to Vitamin C, A, E and Omega-3 found in oily fish such as salmon, herring, sardines, trout, and mackerel and plant sources including avocado, pumpkin seeds and walnuts. Comvita’s Olive Leaf Extract contains powerful antioxidants, equivalent to five times that of Vitamin C.
