Everything-You-Need-to-Know-About-Propolis

First of all, what is Propolis?

Bee Propolis, sometimes affectionately known as “bee glue”, is a resinous material produced by honey bees that acts as a sealant for unwanted spaces in a hive. Honeybees also use it to line the inside of nest cavities, repair honeycomb, and close up the entry point of the hive. Without Propolis, the hives could be susceptible to viruses and bacteria. Honey bees create Propolis by carefully blending together plant resin, tree sap, and beeswax.

How does it benefit humans?

The use of Propolis as a wellness regimen for people dates back centuries. The ancient Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians were aware of its healing properties and made extensive use of it as a form of medicine. Because of its naturally high antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, Propolis has been used to support the body's natural defenses with with upper respiratory tract infections, skin infections, sore throats and/or other mouth infections, and assist in the healing of minor wounds.

How do you gather the Propolis from the hives?

In order to gather raw Propolis, we at Comvita use something called a Propolis Trap, which is essentially a plastic screen placed on top of the hives to mimic the gaps in a hive. Once the honey bees have sealed off the holes with Propolis, our beekeepers carefully extract it from the traps.

What does the PFL® Quality marker mean?

The PFL® Quality Marker stands for Propolis Flavonoid Level and refers to the guaranteed levels of Flavonoids and Phenolics found in every dose of Comvita’s Propolis products. Our standard strength delivers 15mg, while our extra strength delivers 30mg of active propolis flavonoids per daily dose. Propolis is available in a range of formats for both internal and topical applications.

So then, what are Flavonoids and Phenolics?

Flavonoids and Phenolics are fancy words for plant compounds that contain high levels of antioxidant activity. Flavonoids are found in most fruits and vegetables and have been attributed to many of the health benefits found in plant based diets.

How should I take Propolis and how often?

At Comvita, we have a variety of Propolis products with different PFL® levels such as drops, oral sprays, and capsules. It should be taken once a day to support a healthy immune system. All of our Propolis products are free from artificial flavorings, colorings, sweeteners and preservatives, and contain no added sugars, yeast, milk derivatives, wheat or gluten.
