9 Simple Wellness Habits Dr Jonathan Leary Swears By

Forming daily habits that nourish your mind, body, and soul is an important part of selfcare. Dr. Jonathan Leary, founder of LA’s social wellness club Remedy Place, has long been a leader in innovative, holistic self-care. Dr. Leary is sharing the secrets of his wellness routine exclusively with Comvita readers - including some old techniques, some very modern ones, and Comvita UMF™ Manuka Honey to feel (and look) your very best. These 9 tips leverage the best of science and nature to help improve your overall lifestyle, one day at a time. Try to make one small change a day, and before you know it you’ll be in an optimized wellness routine!

1. Movement

The first thing I do when I wake up is move. This is an endorphin rush that I need to get me ready for my day! Furthermore, proper movement cures and prevents pain. I see patients with chronic pain every day and it is a huge priority of mine to make sure I am being preventative so I don't end up in similar situations.

2. Cold Shower

After my workout this is my perfect remedy! It enhances my mental clarity, improves circulation, brightens my skin appearance, and helps me recover from my workout and sleep better that night!

3. Intermittent Fasting

This has been a part of my regimen for almost 5 years now. It is a daily cleanse for my digestive tract and also allows it to repair and decrease inflammation. It boosts my energy, helps with my hormones, improves my mental clarity and overall just makes my body feel incredible.

4. Hydration

Almost every person I know is dehydrated to some extent. This is one of the simplistest foundational health tools that everyone can apply. This will help with aches and pains, digestion, sleep and physical appearance.

5. Breath-work

My 10 minute breath work routine is my reset. It forces me to shut off and it allows me to shift from my conscious brain to my subconscious brain. As a busy individual and a type A personality it was always hard for me to mediate. Finding this practice and doing it before my meditation has been one of the most powerful tools I have added to be present in that moment.

6. Meditation

I am a very visual person, if I can't visualize it it rarely comes true. So my practice is to close my eyes and try to see what life looks like when I obtain that goal, whether it is personal or professional. This also shifts my meditation into a manifestation.

7. Nutrition

Food is legitimately medicine and is the most important thing that everyone should be focusing on. Below I will share some of the most impactful guidelines that have not only impacted my life but every patient and individual I have worked with.

I think you should always be weary of fad diets or quick fixes. Nutrition is pretty simple and if you follow these recommendations, it tends to make all your health goals come true:

  • Eat Less! Every year Americans eat more. This is where intermittent fasting comes in handy
  • Eat Mostly Greens - This is the most nutrient dense food we can put in our body
  • Drink enough water - 1L per day for every 50 pounds
  • Stick to anti-inflammatory foods (wholesome foods like fatty fish, nuts, leafy greens and Manuka Honey) and stay away from pro inflammatory foods like refined carbohydrates and red meat.

By sticking to these simple foundational rules I guarantee you will feel better! No matter what you are dealing with or what your health goals are, this will have a positive impact.

For those of you who need something sweet, it is so important to stay away from refined sugars because all of them will negatively impact your health and over time it can lead to numerous health complications. However, there are some tasty substitutions that will not only satisfy your sweet tooth, but can be positively impactful to your health. This is where I tell patients to use Comvita UMF™ Manuka Honey.

I love Comvita’s Manuka Honey because it can easily be added to your meals, smoothies or simply just taken by the spoonful. It also contains unique signature compounds in the nectar of the Manuka flower that have been shown to be antibacterial and are ideal for soothing your throat when a cough comes on, and help with gut comfort. I find this to be a win-win for my patients as long as it is in moderation.

8. Treat Yourself to a Treatment

I have easy access to holistic doctors and self care technology thanks to Remedy Place, but that shouldn’t stop you from seeking out services like hyperbaric chambers, adjustments, acupuncture, massage, cupping, ice baths, infrared saunas, lymphatic massages or vitamin IVs. Even extra stretching or giving yourself a face massage can help offset any of the stressors we put on our bodies. It’s about making sure your time and resources go to yourself too - after all, you can’t pour from an empty cup!

9. Good Night’s Sleep

Creating the right setting and making sure to find ways to turn off your brain are the keys to getting a good night's sleep. I make sure every night to go to bed at the same time, and don't eat or drink within two hours of bedtime. I make sure there are no lights on or flashing, put on my sound frequencies to help put me in a deeper sleep, and put my thermostat to 69 degrees. Getting a proper night sleep is the body's way to recover and reset each day.
