Why enjoy Manuka Honey every day?

Just like brushing our teeth, spending time outdoors and taking exercise, we all know the benefits of creating a healthy routine that leaves us feeling and looking great. With its many benefits, taking a daily dose of Manuka Honey is a great habit to get into. Here are just a few ways you can incorporate it into your daily routine as part of a healthy, balanced diet:

1. Take it daily by the spoonful

There’s no sugar coating this one – and there’s no need to! Simply enjoy Comvita Manuka Honey straight from the jar by the spoonful. Take it during your daily meditation, with your breakfast or before your workout. The recommended serving size is one tablespoon. It’s so easy to get into the habit of enjoying it every morning or evening.

2. Enjoy it in your tea or coffee

Instead of reaching for the sugar, sweeten your tea or coffee with a teaspoon of Comvita Manuka Honey. It’s a particularly delicious natural sweetener in green tea, chai tea and other herbal teas.

3. Use it in your recipes as a sweetener

Manuka Honey is beloved by nutritionists and dietitians as a wonderful, natural alternative to refined sugars, with an extra nutritional boost. Get a drizzle of its superpowered benefits by using it in baking instead of refined sugar, or as a glaze on baked salmon or chicken.

4. Blend it into a smoothie

Sweeten your favourite shake or smoothie with a touch of Manuka Honey. Try this Banana & Manuka milk shake recipe created for Comvita™ by Megan May, Founder & Creator of Little Bird Organics and the Unbakery Cafe, New Zealand.

Prep time: 2 minutes | Serves: 1 | Equipment required: Blender

This tastes like a classic banana milk shake made with just a few simple ingredients that kids love, and you can feel good about them drinking it.

Ingredients

  • 1 large ripe banana (frozen)
  • 1 cup of unsweetened almond milk
  • ½ cup ice
  • ¼ tsp of vanilla extract
  • 1-2 teaspoons of (add more to taste)
  • Small handful of spinach and blueberries (optional)

Directions
Place everything in a high-speed blender and blend until smooth. This is a little icy and thick when blending but just keep blending, as the ingredients will warm up a little and start to blend well. I like to keep it thick and have the kids eat it with a spoon like ice cream on a hot summer’s day.

Is a daily dose of Manuka Honey good for everyone?

Honey is safe to consume in moderation1. However, there are certain individuals who need to be aware of potential safety risks associated with honey consumption.

  • Children less than 1 year of age are not recommended to consume honey. This is because on rare occasions honey may naturally contain dormant bacterial spores which are not filtered out or killed during processing. These spores do not have any negative impact on health for older age groups, but they can lead to infections in infants due to their immature digestive and immune systems.
  • Anyone allergic to bee products should exercise caution if wanting to consume honey.
  • There is no restriction on honey consumption for pregnant or lactating women. However, they should still follow the guidance of their midwife or doctor as they may be having their glucose monitored. (Glucose is one of the primary components in honey).
  • Any individual with diabetes or severely compromised health should consult with their physician before incorporating honey into their daily diet.
