Twenty years in the Beauty Business

I’ve been in the beauty business for over 20 years and I’ve learnt a lot in that time.  I’ve seen a lot of products arrive on the market with great fanfare, and go just as quickly.  The latest skincare technology promising to reverse the tell tale signs of aging, the newest “it” fragrance, the lipstick that is better than any other before it.  More often than not, the latest thing to hit the market doesn’t last very long.  It seems that so few new products become enduring favourites.  There is something very “faddish” about beauty.

But there is something altogether different that has been emerging in the industry over the past ten years – that is, the rise and rise of natural products.  This is most definitely not a fad!  The momentum that naturals are gaining in the beauty market, as they take hold in virtually every mainstream beauty channel, confirms to me that we are witnessing the most significant change in the industry since the early 1900’s when beauty products first started to be mass produced and be sold on department store shelves.

Naturals are here to stay, and just as the synthetic based products which dominate the market today have evolved over the past 100 years, naturals are on a journey of refinement – becoming more sophisticated, more scientifically researched and more irresistible by the day!   I for one, have converted my total beauty regime to naturals and won’t be going back.  Just the smell of all those chemicals assaulting my senses as I walk the beauty aisles of department stores now makes me feel ill.  Yes, I too have been on a journey!
