How to prepare your home for winter

Winter is coming and it’s time to prepare your home and family for the colder months ahead. Here are some simple tips to keep your home safe and warm until spring.

1. Stay fire safe
Install smoke alarms throughout your home and test them regularly to make sure the battery and alarm sound are operating. Switch off appliances when they’re not in use and never leave heaters, electric blankets or open fires unattended. Clean your fireplace and check your furnace and other heating appliances for damage, dust and debris.

2. Insulate your home
Staying warm in winter means keeping the cold air out. Inspect your home on a windy day to see if there are any drafts coming through your window or doorframes, lighting fixtures, fireplaces or electrical outlets. Find out if it’s worth adding additional insulation in your attic and consider replacing light curtains with heavy, lined drapes that fall below the window frame, to retain more heat in the house.

3. Prepare for storms
Clearing out the gutters and washing the windows can do more than make your home look good, it can also prevent rust and flooding due to a build-up of debris during winter storms. While you’re outdoors, you can also prune back trees that are close to the house and remove any dead foliage or branches that has fallen over autumn. Secure windows and doors and make sure your insurance is up to date.

4. Winterize your car
Prepare your car for the cold months ahead by giving it a thorough clean inside and out. It’s a good time to get a professional service and detail, including checking the heater, brakes, tire pressure, exhaust, coolant, oil, battery and electrical systems. Make sure your windscreen wipers are working and stock up on essentials including an ice scraper and brush, antifreeze, a small shovel and an emergency First Aid kit.

5. Stay well
In addition to clearing out your closet and searching for missing gloves and scarves, it’s a good time to clear out your medicine cabinet and First Aid kit to see what items you may need to replace.
