Damaged hair? Oily locks? Split ends? No matter the reason or hair type, there are plenty of DIY hair masks that can be made right at home using only a few simple ingredients. We’ve selected 5 of our favorite hair mask “recipes” to share for getting hair under control without spending a fortune.

(For longer hair types, just double up on these recipe ingredients to ensure even coverage from root to tip!)

Dry Hair:

  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon Manuka honey

Once a week, blend these ingredients together thoroughly, then rinse your hair with water. Gently dab excess water away with a towel and apply the ingredients to damp hair. Comb through and allow to sit for 30 minutes under a shower cap. Rinse with lukewarm water, then wash out with a mild shampoo and conditioner in warm water. Follow up with a cold-water rinse.

Oily Hair:

  • 1 egg yolk
  • 3 tablespoons of green or blue clay

Twice per week, mix these ingredients together with water until a fine paste is formed. Massage through the hair and allow to sit covered beneath a shower cap for 30 minutes. Rinse hair out with lukewarm water and shampoo afterward.

Color-dyed Hair:

  • 2 egg yolks
  • 3 tablespoons cucumber juice
  • 1 tablespoon Manuka honey
  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil

Three times per week, grate 1 cucumber and squeeze the juice into a bowl, then add the other ingredients and stir well. Apply this mixture to the hair with emphasis on the ends and allow to sit covered for at least 30 minutes. Rinse hair with lukewarm water, followed by shampoo and conditioner in warm water.

Thin Hair:

Once per week, cut an avocado into halves and use the inner flesh to create a paste mixed together with Manuka honey and castor oil. Apply to hair, comb through, and let sit for 1 hour under a cap. Finish by washing hair with a volumizing shampoo and conditioner in warm water.

Curly Hair:

  • 1 avocado
  • 3 teaspoons of virgin coconut oil

Once per week, combine avocado flesh and coconut oil together. Massage the mix into hair and allow the hair mask to sit for about 30 minutes. Finish up with a warm rinse using a curl-defining shampoo and conditioner.
